Request AVMA Delegates to Support Policy for Increased Snake Enclosure Size

We are writing as veterinarians and members of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to respectfully urge the AVMA to adopt a formal policy opposing the housing of snakes in enclosures that do not permit them to fully extend their bodies. This request is grounded in a robust and growing scientific consensus, is consistent with policies adopted by peer veterinary organizations, and reflects the AVMA’s stated commitment to advancing animal welfare through science, education, and advocacy.

I am writing to respectfully urge you to suspend implementation of the recently approved permit authorizing the killing of Catalina Island’s entire mule deer population over the next five years and to direct CDFW to formally evaluate science-based, non-lethal alternatives.

I am writing to you as a veterinarian to express my deep disappointment with the newly released edition of the AVMA Guidelines for the Depopulation of Animals and to urge you, as elected representatives of this profession, to publicly condemn this document. In its current form, these guidelines are not aligned with the veterinary oath, nor do they reflect the values, expectations, or professional judgment of the vast majority of veterinarians.
